Mary J. Blige: The Academy Is Mean!

by on January 24, 2012

Mary J. Blige is super-pissed she didn’t get a nod in the Best Original Song category when the nominations for the 84th annual Academy Awards were announced today.

The singer was hoping for a nod for her song The Living Proof which she penned for The Help which received nods for Best Picture along with Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress nods for Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer.

“I’m so thankful for true fans like you all,” she shared on Twitter. “It saddens me & feels like the Academy is being mean. 2 only nominate 2 of the 5 slots is…….” she added.

She also retweeted a couple of tweets from her fans including ones suggesting that the Oscar snub was racially motivated.

“Not mean Mary they are being racist..They really don’t want to acknowledge “US’ but great work is simply great work they have to,” the fan wrote.

Madonna and Elton John were also shut out from the Oscars for their original songs and Beyonce was not nominated for her song “Listen” because although she was one of the writers her contribution was the smallest and as per Academy Rule 16, only three major contributors of a song are eligible and they chose to acknowledge the three that contributed the most.

Mary plans to pen a song for the documentary The Invisible War so perhaps she’ll get nominated next year but to claim meanness and racism as reasons for not being nominated is a bit too much!

In case you missed it, Mary performed The Living Proof on Live with Kelly this morning and the Oscars will air on February 26th.
