Drake & Ex Go From Trading Poetry To Battling Over Marvin’s Room

by on February 6, 2012

Remember Drake’s remixed-to-death hit Marvn’s Room?

Well Drake’s ex-girlfriend Ericka Lee claims she’s the voice heard on the track and she wants to get paid and has filed suit!

Ericka claims the two dated between 2010 and 2011 during which they traded poems, lyrics and discussed joint projects with Drake asking her to sing the hook and do the voicemail recording on Marvin’s Room promising they would split the profits.

“Plaintiff’s contribution is highly significant to the overall work,” the suit says.

Ericka claims Drake acknowledged her work through text messagses – “U basically made that song. It’s s–t without you” – and credited her as a vocalist as “Syren Lyric Muse” along with registering the recording with the U.S. Copyright Office.

But you know how these things go when you don’t have a contract.

In July Ericka filed a claim saying “My works and voice are used on this work,” Drake’s label fired back stating in its own claim that Ericka was an “employer for hire.”

After they broke up and  things got ugly Drake suppposedly sent her a text offering her 2% of the “publishing royalties.”

When she hired a lawyer in November, Drake threatened her over the phone asking, “What the f— is your problem?” and offered her “4-5%” of publishing monies plus a $50,000 cash to go away.

She refused and instead filed suit and wants to be declared as the song’s co-writer, plus damages and a cut of the profits.

Drake through his rep said he’s looking forward to his day in court and he made no threats against Ericka.

“This claim is entirely without merit and our client has not engaged in any wrongful conduct. Ericka Lee consented to the use of her voice in the song ‘Marvin’s Room’ prior to its release. Lee asked only for the credit she received as ‘Syren Lyric Muse,’ and she did not ask for any compensation. It was only after she retained a lawyer that there was a demand for payment. Drake tried for months to resolve the matter amicably, and he now looks forward to being vindicated in court.”

The lesson here?

Always sign a contract even with your rapper boyfriend and as Queen Latifah says, “When it came time to be a professional rapper, I wouldn’t sign anything without reading it.”
