Beyonce’s L’Officiel Paris Cover + Behind The Scenes Photos & Video

UPDATE: view the complete photoshoot here - Beyonce For L’Officiel Paris Magazine (March 2011) – The Complete Photoshoot

Here’s the cover along with some behind the scenes photos and video from Beyonce‘s photoshoot for the March issue of L’Officiel Paris.

The magazine which is celebrating its 90th anniversary decided to do an African Queen themed photoshoot with the singer which is causing some controversy with accusations of her donning blackface.

Here are my feelings on this:

First let me say that I love Beyonce but as a Nigerian and someone who lived there for a bit when Fela was still alive this is not a tribute to him.

I’ve spoken to my Nigerian friends both in North America and in Nigeria and showed them the photos and none of them considered it a tribute…I understand that her husband jay-Z is a co-producer of the Fela musical but that’s no reason for this foolishness.

If this were a Martin Luther King tribute would she have painted her face black? In Nigeria we have all shades of black so I’m not really sure how this is a tribute to Fela.

And I don’t even see how the clothes factor into the tribute. The only thing close to anything I’ve seen my mom wear or that I wore as a kid is the headress and even then it’s not tied properly.

It’s as if what the magazine considers “African” is someone with the darkest skin possible and as someone of Nigerian heritage it’s beyond offensive; It’s downright hurtful to see these stereotypes perpetuated.

I don’t even blame Beyonce for this shoot because I stopped expecting much from artists years ago and besides a lot of them don’t see beyond dollar signs.

Africa is a rich and diverse continent and Fela was one of its greatest ambassadors and exports and I didn’t even realize how big of an impact he had until I moved back over to North America as an adult.

To listen to his music, to see his performances, and listen to elders tell stories about him still doesn’t encapsulate everything he meant to the country.

He was our freedom fighter and yes he was a womanizer and a flawed man and I disliked that about him but I hate the fact that an important part of my heritage is being basterdized just to sell magazines.

When the shoot comes out I’m sure we’ll all post it and oooh and ahhh over it and move on but make no mistake: this IS NOT a tribute to Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti

Check out  the footage below and let me know what you think of the shoot. FYI The dress Bey’s wearing on the cover is  from Gucci‘s Spring 2011 Collection and the white outfit is from Viktor & Rolf - Runway at Paris Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2011

FYI this is not the first time L’Officiel has done a shoot with black paint. It frequently slathers black paint on white models rather than hire black models and I wrote a piece on it last September.

okay so I love Beyonce but I am offended that they felt that in order to pay tribute to Fela they had to slather her in black paint. I happen to be Nigerian and in my household like every other household in Nigeria there are various shades of black. I have an aunt who is so light skinned you'd swear she was white from a distance.
And if the magazine REALLY wanted to pay tribute to Fela then they should have found a Nigerian model…we have plenty of them walking runways around the world.
So while I love Bey I'm just shaking my head at this especially seeing as Will.I.Am got flack for something similar
I understand that her hubby is the co-producer of Fela the musical but I am tired of Americans bastardizing my culture
First Swizz Beatz did a horrendous remix to Fela's songs now this…this is an insult to his memory.

I mean y couldn't they get Oluchi Onweagba to do the shoot?

    smh!

    • http://iluluonline.com/ iLuLu

My point exactly! makes no damn sense! plus we have light skinned folks in Nigeria so what was the point

    • ify jibunoh

U jst hit d nail on the head, yea,y wasn’t oluchi used!thumbs up to ur comment.bye

  • Jay

    Beyonce #Slayed……
Its good to see her back on covers! Get ready……..

    • http://iluluonline.com/ iLuLu

lol so I guess you don’t find the shoot offensive?

    • beyonce is a bitch

Beyonce's a f-king bitch! she aint slay shit!

  • Jay

@LuLu no, she was paying homage to a icon…Its nothing but black makeup and they make it so people can wear it…. Its Art,
Like I said bey slayed and she will again for the future covers your faves just can’t seem to get <3

    • http://iluluonline.com/ iLuLu

loooool I’m actually a fan of Beyonce but the Nigerian in me fails to see how painting ones skin pays tribute to Fela. I mean would they paint her skin if she was paying tribute to Malcom X?

  • Jay

If she would have painted her face white people still would have had something to say…. Do u really think she was trying to be offensive??? I mean do u think she went to the shoot intending on hurting or offending you or any1?
    Answer that please!
Anyway like I said its nice to see her Back on covers I missed #TALENT <3

    • http://iluluonline.com iLuLuOnline

I'm sure she didn't set out to be offensive…but at the same time it's obvious she didn't think it through…most of these artists never do…at the end of the day they're looking to promote themselves. As much I love Beyonce and her music I will call her out when I feel she's done something silly

And look at it this way: if she were a white woman donning black paint we'd call in Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton by now

  • http://www.facebook.com/tobypm Toby Paul Martin Donastorg

Beautiful , if anyone knows anything about black face you would know that is is not it, this is art plane and simple

    • Get overyourselves

For real… not black face at all…
just something to complain about and get each other fueled up

  • Jay

@Lulu agreed if she was a white woman it would be like that but bey isn’t white and never claimed to be,,its like when me and close friends say nigga we wouldn’t wanna hear it from some1 white…., Idk seeing that I’m a studio stylist so I wrk on a lot of sets I look at it like its art!

    • http://iluluonline.com/ iLuLu

mmmm well it’s good to get both points of view and I definitely see your point

    • sugabelly

People who say nigger or nigga are fools. Black people who say nigger or nigga are even bigger fools.

What Beyonce did is UNACCEPTABLE. That she is Black does not make it any more acceptable. And not only that, Beyonce is a FOREIGNER. She is NOT a Nigerian and she has no right to desecrate a Nigerian icon.

      This rubbish is unforgivable.

      Beyonce is a BLOODY FOOL.

      • http://iluluonline.com/ iLuLu

        HERE, HERE!!!

  • http://www.twitter.com/gaminegirlie Gam

Nothing offensive except the fact that that gele just ain't right!!! lol :D

    • http://iluluonline.com/ iLuLu

lol …. ah well for me just knowing how the NA attitude is towards Nigerians for me it just perpetuates the stereotypes they have about us…but hey if you don’t find it offensive that’s cool too.

  • krystalx

I would have much rather seen Sade or Oluchi do this..how is this a "tribute" beyonce makes me ashamed to be an African American.

  • fifzola

First of all Beyonce is not a white lady, she is a black person, so why should she paint herself dark to represent Africans? Who said all Africans or Nigerians are all dark? I understand that she as not alone on this she was with the magazine crew but why cant she stand up for other black people and be a voice for black pride? This is sucha shame!

    • http://iluluonline.com/ iLuLu

my sentiments exactly…it’s such an ignorant and upsetting shoot and then to drag Fela’s name into this just adds a huge insult to injury!

    • Get Overyourselves

she is mixed. she is not black. Get your facts right.

      • http://iluluonline.com/ iLuLu

When was the last time you heard a black singer described as mixed by the media?…I know you love Beyonce but please don’t go over board with the blind adoration I was a fan until this

  • Carlos

I am not a fan of Beyonce ! but I am sure she meant no harm! Just art! There is no right or wrong when you are creating ! just freedom!

    • http://iluluonline.com/ iLuLu

having freedom doesn’t give us the license to do anything we please…but that’s just how I feel…the sad part is this shoot made me “unfan” Beyonce…bah well I’m sure she’s not losing sleep over lil ol me

  • Get Overyourselves

Geez get over yourselves. it is just a picture. Seriously people just aren't happy unless they are complaining about something. for real in this day and age why is that offensive. it was meant as a tribute not an insult so if you dont like it and are offended by it dont buy the issue… simple as that.

  • Omarie…

  • http://www.that1960chickc.om Tee

I agree with everything Lulu has said!
As a nigerian this is so not reflective of Fela…period!
As I said on my blog if they were so keen to pay homage to Fela, why didn't they have her dressed as Fela? Or one of fela's queens.
I am a huge Bey fan…but this is just foolery on all levels. Gbam! http://www.that1960chick.com

    • http://iluluonline.com/ iLuLu

and now L’officiel is saying that Bey volunteered to have her face painted so basically they’re putting the responsibility on her and are denying it was a tribute to Fela. Mind you they only did this after the uproar reached an international level lol and like I said before this is not the first time they’ve done this. They routinely do this with white models rather than hire black ones
*sigh* anyways I’m done with all of this….I’m not giving any more publicity to someone who clearly doesn’t care

  • LisaO

Reader's here is the deal…Beyonce, L’Officiel artists made a mockery of 'black african beauty'. They darkened her face BUT let her wear BLONDE STRAIGHT HAIR. So your opinion "be your own"!

  • Pingback: OMG: Beyonce Does Black Face, Takes Heat | TwitterBanged

  • Oby Nwaogbe

Wow! I have everyone's comments and agree with just a few. Like Lisa O said, darkening her face with Blonde Straight Hair does not depict anything Fela. If anything Fela was a traditional man and liked his Pure African Women. Thanks iLulu for shading light on this. Next time any other artist out there does an African photoshot to honor whomever, they'll do some research first.

    • http://iluluonline.com/ iLuLu

      lol Thanks for the support….
