Songwriter Earl Shuman is suing Alicia claiming the singer’s tune sounds a bit too similar to his 1962 composition “Lonely Boy” which hit #2 on the Billboard charts when it was recorded by Eddie Holman as “Hey There Lonely Girl.”
Shuman says he got wind of the infringement after reading a story by a blogger, who pointed out that in the middle of Girl on Fire, Alicia sang a few bars from Hey There Lonely Girl and referred to it as an uncredited sample. Guess Shuman wants his credit after all!
Check out Alicia’s Diane Martel-directed video for Brand New Me which was penned by Emeli Sande. And take a listen to Girl on Fire and Here There Lonely Girl and see if you can hear the similarities.
